Style Curation

“I’m quite positive most everyone desires that curated look!”

Style curation (yes, it’s a thing), let's talk about it. Curating is basically the act of creating a collection to display. You literally select, organize, and present your style to your interior designer. If you’re looking to redesign your kitchen, you’ll need to start somewhere. The first step? Style curation. I can’t tell you how delightful it is when a designer has a client with this step already done!

Using the internet to curate your look almost goes without saying—IT MUST BE DONE. Do you remember the old days when people used to collect magazines like Southern Living in order to cut out photos of room scapes they liked? Well, now we have Pinterest. No more folders with goo-gobs of clippings. Just pin photos that fit your aesthetic to an online board and BOOM—virtual inspiration! Even Houzz, Instagram, Facebook, and Google have hopped on the “collection” train. It’s indeed a thing. You neeeeed to curate a collection of design inspiration on a Pinterest board before you start any design project. In today’s world, it’s imperative. If you know me or have ever worked with me on a design project, you already know what I’m going to ask first! “Have you created an “inspo-board” on Pinterest yet?”

I have been curating novel ideas for small spaces ever since becoming absolutely enchanted with the “tiny house” movement when it took off in 2013. Small space design is my niche, it just does ALL THE THINGS for me—I’m in love! In 7 years I have curated quite the collection of ideas related to small space design and style, with over 1100 pins using Pinterest. Yes, I love it. You can conveniently curate your style for any and every design project AND fit it all in your back pocket. The only thing better than this is actually living in the space you created using your inspo-board! I almost feel like I need an AMEN.

All the photos shown in this post are pins taken from various inspo-boards I created when working with different clients. Aren’t they lovely?! You can do it too! Now, a few tips for using Pinterest as your primary style curator, if I may…

  1. Start with a general board. When you create your profile (if you don’t already have one!), begin with a board that defines you: your taste, your aesthetic, your style. Pin all the things you find around the web or on your Pinterest wall (which is populated with pins from other pinners that Pinterest thinks you’d like) here. This will help you better understand what you like and help you clearly define your style.

  2. Get the Pinterest Chrome-add-on-thingy (what’s it called?)… The Pinterest Browser Button! It allows you to quickly add an image from nearly anywhere on the internet to one of your Pinterest boards. Let’s face it #convenienceisking. This allows you to easily capture anything that catches your eye while you’re bouncing around the web. It’s brilliant!

  3. Spend some time on that thing! I don’t know, call it self care. Pinterest defines what you’d like based off the pins you collect. The more you collect, the better Pinterest will be able to determine what you would be into. Pretty soon your entire Pinterest feed will be made up of your personal style, wholly curated by you!
