Small House Charm

“New Bern ain’t too shabby! But don’t take my word for it…”

Soooo, New Bern, North Carolina is not the kind of town I envisioned myself settling into. I’m a city girl! My favorite being our nation’s capital, Washington DC; BUT ☝🏾, we all know how events in one’s life and or the God of the Bible can lead you into places of employment you would’ve neverrrr considered (story of my life). Anyway, here I am in New Bern, and after only spending 15 minutes TOTAL getting in and out of the DMV to have my license renewed, I came to realize—New Bern ain’t too shabby! But don’t take my word for it…

Meet Miss Gracie Mae. She happened to be out tending her front yard flower grove when I stumbled by. She was happy to be in my little mini-shoot and she shared a few bits about her darling home with me! “It was built in the late 1700s (possibly she said) and was moved to its current location.” She said she’s done a ton of work to it and positively LOVES it! “It was completely gutted in the 90s to have all the ‘innards’ updated,” she recalled, “but they managed to salvage all the old millwork, doors, and flooring.” That pleasant little exchange was such a sweet treat to top off my little house hunt that day. 🏡🥰

Before meeting Miss Gracie, I was out lurking for a bit of blog inspiration. That’s when I happened upon these little gems! I was so enthused, I had to include them! There’s just something entirely charming about a small house. I can’t be the only one who thinks this, in fact I know I’m not. The tiny house movement, as far as I know, began mobilizing after the release of YouTuber Kristen Dirksen's documentary, “We The Tiny House People: Small Homes, Tiny Flats, and Wee Shelters” in 2012. Media seems to always give voice to movements, and this was no exception. Her YouTube channel features small, tiny, wee dwellings all over the world and now has over 1 million subscribers. In fact, it seems as though the movement needed so much coverage that she went on to create two more documentaries and the first one currently has over 3.5 MILLION views!!! Oh, do check them out! You will not be disappointed.
